New EU payment rules: relief for

The EU has agreed on key elements of the new Payment Services Regulation (PSR) – with welcome news for the hotel industry.

Particularly relevant for everyday hotel operations: merchant-initiated transactions (MIT) remain exempt from the planned eight-week refund right. These include no-show fees, cancellation fees, and subsequent credit card charges for additional services or damages. In future, these amounts cannot be automatically reclaimed from guests.

For hotels, this means greater legal certainty for guaranteed bookings, better protection of revenues, and planning security in revenue and liquidity management.

In addition, the new EU regulation provides for greater transparency in payment fees. Payment service providers will have to disclose their costs more clearly in the future, making it easier for hotels to compare providers and improve cost control.

Conclusion:
The agreement on the PSR (Payment Services Regulation) is positive for hotels overall. It protects proven payment processes in hotel operations while creating greater transparency in payment transactions.
